Lattice models of amorphous plasticity: from depinning to shear-banding

The plastic behavior of glasses and amorphous materials exhibits a rich and complex phenomenology: avalanches, shear-banding, dependence on thermal and mechanical history... In this talk we present recent results obtained at microscopic and mesoscopic scales. In amorphous materials, plastic deformation mainly results from series of local rearrangements of the disordered structure (shear transformations). We propose a simple method to characterize potential rearranging zones by a local yield stress. We then show that at mesoscopic scale, lattice models of amorphous plasticity which rely on the interplay of a disordered threshold local dynamics and elastic interactions nicely reproduce most of the phenomenology of amorphous plasticity.
